3rd Grade Math Assessments

I've been spending the first few days of my summer break working on finishing up my latest project! I have been wanting for the longest time to have some pre and post assessments to use in my classroom. I really want to start focusing on targeting weak skills before teaching a unit and also doing remediation for students during each unit. This product took a lot of work, but I'm confident that this will help me have more success guiding and teaching my math instruction this year.

The bundle will include 8 pre assessments, 8 post assessments, and the checklists for both. The unit tests are aligned with the South Carolina 3rd grade standards, but they are very similar to the Common Core standards.

The unit tests included are in the following order:

1) Place Value
2) Addition and Subtraction
3) Multiplication
4) Division
5) Area and Perimeter
6) Geometry
7) Fractions
8) Measurement and Data

I don't plan on using the pre assessments to take up a whole lesson. I want to use them during my morning work block, so that I don't have to spend time taking up a lesson. I would recommend doing it several days before you plan on teaching it so that you have time to analyze the data using the checklist. Each pre assessment has 10 questions covering all of the standards under that unit strand. The checklist looks like this:

At the top of each checklist are the standards. They are editable so that you can type in each child's name. Once you have graded each assessment, just fill in the row with x's or check mark's to show which standards were mastered on each unit assessment. To see which standards students are struggling with, I would highlight the columns with lots of x's. In addition, you many also want to highlight the students who missed most of the questions so you know know is not getting the content. If you wish to group your students based on the data for guided math, that is also an option.

As far as the post assessments go, you will use the checklists to see which students need reteaching or which standards you need to reteach. You will use the same process. Highlight standards with lots of x's or students who missed lots of questions.

AND, coming soon, the South Carolina Regions and Places unit. I have been working on this for a HOT minute, but I put it on the back burner so I could finish up these math assessments! The unit will come with full lesson plans, one flipchart with embedded links to each lesson, and resources to accompany each lesson!

Math Homework Bundle for the Year

I have been working on this math homework bundle for quite some time, but between taking care of a little one, moving schools, and trying to find time for myself too, it has been quite the undertaking! But it is finally done!!

This bundle was written with the 3rd grade South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards in mind, but they are quite similar to the Common Core standards. There are only a few minor differences and I have covered them both quite well.

I have included 118 half sheets total for all five domains:
* Number Sense and Base 10
* Number Sense Fractions
* Geometry
* Algebraic Thinking & Operations
* Measurement and Data Analysis

To see how each page is set up, see the image below.

This bundle can be used in numerous ways. If you choose not to go the traditional homework route, these can be used as assessments or exit tickets instead.

In my true fashion, I always give away one set of my newest creations. If you wish to win this set, all you need to do is guess my latest Netflix addiction!  Happy guessing!

Landforms Flipbook Activity

This week in Science we have been learning about Earth's Land Features. All week we took notes, learned hand gestures, and watched a video, and then we made a landform flipbook. I have to say, it came out SOOOO cute!! I got the idea from an AIMS lesson and adapted it for the SC landforms. Here is what it looks like completed!

And here it is in action!

Hear All Assessment Recorder Giveaway

Hey all! I am so excited to share some news with you! Like many other bloggers out there, I was contacted by Jenny at Learnning Resources and offered the chance to try out some of their amazing products in my classroom!

The Hear All Assessment Recorder is a teachers dream!
I was able to use it during Guided Reading groups and record the students reading aloud to me. As a teacher, sometimes I am not sure if I am catching on to all the mistakes students make and whether or not I am giving them the best feedback to improve their fluency and comprehension, so I think this tool is great because you can play it back for your colleagues and have them give you some suggestions also!

It comes with a USB so you can just plug it in and download the files right to your computer!

There are so many other great uses for this assessment tool! It picks up EVERY little sound so you don't miss a thing! I know sometimes when I am listening to a student read, I have a hard time hearing them with background noise, so this is great for that!

Now, you will never need another student monitor when you have to leave the classroom for a minute! Just hit play and go! When you come back, you can listen to see who was getting into mischief! I love this idea!

We are doing Guided Reading bench marking in about a week so I am excited to use this to help me code their running records. Sometimes the kids go so fast, I can't keep up with the coding and listening! This will definitely be a great help!

Finding the Range and Measuring

I gave my students the exact rulers they will use on the PASS test (our lovely state standardized test) to practice measuring with. Just click the image below to download.

I am just so proud of this next activity! I came up with a clever name and it fit with one of my adorable clip art sets! We practiced and played this today and they were loving it!

Equation Sentences and a Tutorial

So I just arrived back home from the wedding and am trying to relax, but before I got too comfy and lazy on my couch, I wanted to share my creation from my car trip home and the tutorial for Activ Inspire I promised yesterday!

One of the standards my students REALLY struggled with on their math benchmark test was matching a word problem to the correct number sentence. Essentially, it's algebra and it's freakin' hard. Thus, this little activity was born. I didn't feel like making it all jazzy and snazzy with clip art, so it just looks like this. I plan on laminating and cutting the cards apart. You just print the second page on the back of the first page so the students can just flip the card over for the answer choices.

Click HERE to download.

And here is the tutorial I promised introducing you to some buttons and features you may not have known about in Activ Inspire.

Hope this is helpful!!

AND HAPPY EARTH DAY! I wish I had time to make a freebie for it! I plan on stealing some ideas to use tomorrow from Pinterest!

Even and Odd Outcome Zing

We took our Math benchmark test this week and it turns out, my students are really struggling in math this year. I am sure my 7 week absence played a role as well, but I can't help but thinking that I didn't do a good job. =(

My plan of action was to take all of the standards students missed 6 or more questions on and focus on those for the next 10 days until the PASS test. Monday, we are working on odd and even outcomes so I made up a fun little "Zing" game for students to practice.

I hope you can use it! Just click the image above to download it for free!

I am on my way to Jacksonville, FL right now for my boyfriend's, brother's wedding. I'm able to get internet in the car thank goodness! It has definitely helped pass the time! We got a wireless hub with three free months when we bought our new Dell XPS Ultrabook. I am loving it!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Let me know how you like the game! There will most likely be many more in the coming weeks!

I also have another Activ Inspire tutorial on special buttons and features! So, stay tuned!

Government Sort and a Shout Out

So last week we learned about the Constitution and how our great nations government was created. We read, "We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution," and then learned about the national, state, and local branches of government. To help the kids reinforce their knowledge, we used this graphic organizer to take notes about the branches.

I also just want to thank everyone again for purchasing my clip art and using it to create things for your classrooms and for others! It makes me feel so good that you all have embraced this hobby! =)

I just want to give a shout out to Jayne Gammons at ABC's of Reading for using my clip art to make this adorable set which you can check out here!

I also want to say thanks to Mary Pitner, from Pitner's Potpourri for using my clip art to create these cute money games, which you can view here, here, and here!

And finally, I want to thank Katie Klohn at Adventures of a 6th Grade Teacher, for not only being one of the first to purchase my graphics, but to also use them! You can see my frame in her adorable button for her first ever linky here! (I need to do that, btw...)

I am like a proud mama and I want to say thank you again to ALL of you for supporting me in this new venture!

I will be back SOON with new clip art to unveil! I have just been so busy!! I am also still working on the Common Core Math Word Wall Words for 1st grade! I hope to have it done soon! So many things to do and so little time!!

Poetry Unit and a Holiday Giveaway!

I have been working like a mad woman (like that simile!?) to get this unit finished and available for purchase in my Teacher's Notebook store! I have seriously been in a frenzy for the last two days trying to finish it all up. It feels good to have it done!

We are working on characteristics of poetry and devices of figurative language when we return from our Christmas break so I thought I would share the love I've put into it with all of you, for a small fee of course. =)

This colorful unit includes elements of poetry (rhyme, repetition, and stanzas) and activities and poems for teaching similes and metaphors, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, personification, and alliteration!

Head to my store and grab your copy!

When I reach 30 shoppers who have me as a favorite store on Teacher's Notebook, I will be giving away this unit to one lucky liker! =)

To participate in the giveaway, you must either:

1) Add me as a favorite on Teacher's Notebook
3) Tell me your favorite winter writing activity for after the Christmas holidays! (I desperately need your good ideas...)
Or do all of the above for more chances to win!

Oh and don't forget to leave your e-mail in one of the comments!

Please leave a separate comment for each way you enter.
