The 12 trick doesn't make sense 2x10=20, 20+2=22, but 2x12=24. Am I missing something here?
ReplyDeleteI think they are saying: 2x10=20,then 2x2=4 then you add the two 20+4=24. Does this make sense? I believe you missed a step in your example.
DeleteThanks Stephanie, I fixed a while ago. =) It should be correct. Take the first factor and multiply by 10, the second factor and multiply by 2, then add those. =)
DeleteThanks for the amazingly wonderful page! But the 12 times hint is still a little off. It should read, "Multiply the other fact by 10 and then by 2. Then add those." As it is, it sounds like there are three factors--12, the "first factor," and the "second factor." Thanks again for a great resource!

The 12's trick works like this: For 12X2, you make 12 into its expanded form of 10+2 and then multiply each by the 2 and add together. So, 10X2=20 and 2x2=4, then 20+4=24.

Shouldn't the 12's be Take the other factor and first multiply it by 10 and then 2 and the add them together.

ReplyDelete12's should read....." Take the second factor, multiply by 10, then multiply by 2 and add those together.................right now its talking about the digits of the second factor being multiplied by 10 and 2. Other than that these are great!
ReplyDeleteGood tricks! Some of them are different from the ones I learned as a kid. 12s was "same and double". For example, 12x3=36 Copy down the first number, then double it. When it gets bigger, just carry and add.
ReplyDelete12x5=60. It's the 5, doubled to 10. zero goes in the ones place and you carry then one and add it to the five.
Maybe that's way more complicated than yours though, huh? :)
Ginger, what font did you use for the nine trick? That's the only one I get blurry lines for when I print it. I thought maybe I could download the font and it would work. But when I think about it, if it's a PDF, it should print correctly, right? This will really help my kids. Thanks for sharing.

The answers the tens column counts up 0 to 9 and the ones column counts down from 9 to 0.
I am a first time homeschooling mom and have had a hard time teaching my 3rd graders the times table. I realize it's an older post but I just saw it. THANK YOU!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this graphic, do you have an 8's trick? That seems be be one of the tables that many kids have trouble with as well...
ReplyDeleteI do not have one for 8, but you can use the six trick for 7's and 8's. For 7's you just go back and counts by ones twice and for 8's count by ones three times.

DeleteFive, six, seven, eight. Fiffy-six equals seven times eight.
7x7=49: The sevens look like the pick axes used during the gold rush. The football team 49ers is named after the year of the gold rush.
Gross but seldom forgotten by fifth and sixth graders:
I ate (8) and I ate (8) 'til I was sick on the floor. 8x8 is 64.
I love the chart! There were a few I didn't know and they were a, "How cool is that?"
ReplyDeleteI'm a high school math teacher and I knew the 9's trick but I LOVE the 6's trick. So many of my students have trouble with their times tables and I think these will help! Thank you!!

ReplyDeleteI'm sure this is well known by all of you, but when you check to make sure you have your 9's multiplied properly, you add your results together and should always get 9

I had the lines issue with the 9's trick too. :/ I did open the image in a new tab. Then I went to print setup and put it up to 200% and printed it (it's readable but a teeny bit blurry. I was able to cut the words out and paste them to cover the lines) It came out to almost the same size without the line issue. :) Thank you so much for this!!! It is my first year homeschooling my three. This helped me! I didn't learn any of these tricks in school. My oldest had taught me the hand trick but I was able to teach her the trick with 6's! I was so excited!!!!! Thank you again!!

I like the math skills which you have mentioned.I can't understand why kids hate math.It's such a interesting subject.If they have any problem in it then they can understand it with help of online tutoring.
